Melt butter, syrup, sugar, and salt; stir in the oats until every flake gleams.

Why this works
Golden syrup's buttery caramel tang has no true substitute — honey works but reads as honey; corn syrup reads as nothing.

Press FIRMLY into a lined 20 cm tin (loose packing = crumble) and bake at 180°C: 20 minutes for chewy, 25 for snappy.
